Chess Club

Chess Club Sponsor and Coach:

Brent Haggen and Alvin Earp

Club Description:

Chess is a fun game that improves thinking and problem-solving skills and helps build self-confidence. Chess club is meant to foster scholar’s intellectual growth while having fun.

Meeting Dates/Times:

Chess club meets every Thursday from 7:00 - 8:00 AM in the LMS cafeteria. The only exception to meeting times is when Mr. Haggen and Mr. Earp are both unavailable and when Milestone testing is being conducted. Students acknowledge that academics take priority over chess club. Scholars will only attend meetings when they are in good academic standing. Scholars are not required but are encouraged to attend all club meetings.

Expectations:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with all school rules while participating in chess club. Parents/guardians are expected to ask their scholar about chess club activities and contact Mr. Haggen or Mr. Earp with any questions or concerns.

Competitions:

Select students will be asked to represent Lowndes Middle School in competitive matches against other schools. To compete in official tournaments students must be a member of the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF). Students can join or renew their USCF membership HERE.
